SECTION 8 PRODUCT IDENTIFICATION AND TRACEABILITY
GENERAL POLICY
Materials, components, subassemblies, accessories and products are identified by a part number correlated to corresponding drawings, specifications, and other technical documents. Finished products are uniquely identified by serial numbers.
PROCEDURAL POLICIES
1. Responsibility
1.1 The Engineering department is responsible for assigning part numbers (issued by Document Control) and serial numbers (issued by the MRP II system database), and for maintaining pertinent documentation and records.
1.2 Receiving and Production are responsible for marking purchased products and manufactured parts/subassemblies, respectively. All personnel handling products are responsible for maintaining the identification.
1.3 Quality Control Inspectors are responsible for labeling finished products with their product identifications, including serial numbers upon acceptance of final tests and inspections.
2. Material, Part, and Product Identification
2.1 All purchased and in-house manufactured materials and parts are identified with the company's internal part numbers assigned by the Engineering department and documented in Purchased Part Specifications (PPSs). The part numbers provide for correlation between a part and its technical documentation.
2.2 Finished products are labeled with a unique serial number to allow for traceability of product configurations. Certain finished products that are accessories to custom products require testing immediately prior to shipment and are serialized only after testing is completed.
2.3 Assignment, marking, and maintenance of product identification are regulated by General Process Specification G9010, Product Identification and Traceability.
3. Records
3.1 The Document Control department maintains the part number lists and associated technical documentation assigned by Engineering. The serial number of a product is the key to correlation with its parts list, technical documentation, and quality records.
